Street vendors hope to return after hearing

City vendors have been sidelined all season. City vendors have been sidelined all season.
ATLANTA -

Atlanta street vendors who have been sidelined all baseball season got a glimmer of hope on Thursday. A Fulton County judge heard their plea on Thursday to get back on the job.

Stanley Hambrick and about a dozen other vendors argued that they should be allowed to set up shop outside of Turner Field.

Last year, Robert Frommer, a lawyer for one vendor, won a case at Fulton Supreme Court.  The previous city administrator had wanted all vendors to operate high-rent city kiosks. Frommer was able to get that order thrown out.

On Thursday, Frommer argued that the city misinterpreted that earlier court ruling and wrongfully eliminated all street vending with devastating consequences.

"There are people who are losing their houses and people who are struggling to pay their bills and it all has come down because of the city's misinterpretation of the order," Frommer said.

The judge agreed to issue a new ruling clarifying the order, leaving the vendors hopeful they can return to the sidewalks.

The vendors have watched on the sidelines as the city has embraced large-scale marketing of national sporting events.

"The city has a lot of problems but we are not one of them, and basically all we want to do is work and feed our families," Larry Miller, the president of the Atlanta Vendors Association.

The Braves' home schedule is more than half over. There are 30 home games remaining. Vendors would like to get out as soon as possible and recoup some losses from the first half of the year.

FOX 5 did not hear back from the city attorney's officer or the mayor's office.
