Ousted Dr. Walker calls SACS biased, untrustworthy

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Ousted DeKalb County School Board Chairman Eugene Walker is trying to get his job back. Dr. Walker took his case before an administrative judge Wednesday.

Walker's attorney opened up the hearing by telling the judge that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement, known as SACS, is biased and cannot be trusted.

The attorney said that SACS misrepresented facts in its report and it was that report that triggered Gov. Nathan Deal's removal of six DeKalb County School Board members. However, SACS first put the entire DeKalb school district on probation.

The Attorney General's Office says this is not about discrediting SACS. Attorneys for the State government said that Walker doesn't care about the students in the DeKalb school district; he just wants his old job back.

Just before Wednesday's hearing started, a community activist spoke out in Walker's support

"We don't have to go to Washington to see where voters have been disenfranchised," said Derrick Bozeman, a Community activist. "The removal of Dr. Walker and the board members from the DeKalb County School Board is a throwback to the 1950's.

"[When] You can un-elect elected officials -- not by using a ballot box, but by the stroke of a pen -- we are at the very days of Edmund Pettus Bridge."

Dr. Walker's attorney claims to have 10 witnesses and the Attorney General's Office says it has two.

A judge ordered SACS to turn over hundreds of emails. . The accrediting agency used those emails to create a stinging report on the DeKalb School board that landed the district on probation. The judge asked AdvancEd to turn the documents over to him and he would decide their relevance.
