ANNA HURD MURDER: Boyfriend sentenced to 22 years

Posted: Updated:

On the Maplewood trail where 16-year-old Anna Hurd was murdered on Feb. 23, family and friends gathered to pray shortly after her killer, boyfriend Anthony Mitchell, was sentenced.

Mitchell will turn 18 next month and was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Tuesday, but with good behavior he could be out in 14. At that point, he'll barely be 32 years old.

Neither Mitchell nor his family spoke during the sentencing, but Hurd's family continues to be haunted by his repeated lies in the days before his arrest.

Anthony Mitchell was certified as an adult last month and admitted to stabbing Hurd five times while they were on the trail back in February – he was upset she wouldn't speak to him, and also upset she was moving to Texas to live with her mother without him.

Reports from the medical examiner show one of the stab wounds went into Anna's heart, and she bled to death. Those and other details make family grateful they are not going to trial.

"We picked up the 600-page police report today and I got to page three and I threw up," Anna Hurd's mother Jennifer Hutchings said.

To say family hoped for more prison time is an understatement.

"I just wish they had the death penalty in Minnesota, because what he did to her was overkill and she suffered so much," Hutchings said.

Friends are still trying to wrap their heads around the entire situation.

"He's going to be in jail less time than she was alive, and he even admitted to it," friend Jess Lacasse said.

"I think all of us are just hurting so much, and so mad and just so confused because Anthony was our friend, too," friend Alea Marose said.
