Kwame Kilpatrick asks again to be let out of prison

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Kwame Kilpatrick's conviction on public corruption charges hurt, but that wasn't the only pain he felt after being taken into federal custody. Kilpatrick injured his knee.

Now he wants out of Milan federal prison because he says it does not have what he needs to rehab that injured hinge.

"Milan does not have either physical therapy facilities, or medical facilities, or equipment necessary for Mr. Kilpatrick's continuing medical care," his attorney, Harold Gurewitz, wrote in a recent court filing. "Mr. Kilpatrick's need to obtain and to continue proper treatment for his knee surgery are reasons that he is not a flight risk."

It is not clear when this issue will be decided, but in the meantime, Kilpatrick says he needs two physical therapy sessions a week of 90 minutes each.

Meanwhile, a sentencing date has not been set for Kilpatrick. A change in lawyers has caused a delay. Kilpatrick will likely be sentenced in the fall, perhaps September at the earliest.
