A soldier from Fort Drum, in northern New York, was killed while on patrol in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced.

Spc. Javier Sanchez Jr., 28, of Greenfield, Calif., died June 23, in Sar Rowzah, the Pentagon said. His unit was on mounted patrol when an improvised bomb detonated, fatally wounding him, the military said.

Sanchez, an infantryman, was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based out of Fort Drum.

He had served in Iraq from 2008 to 2009 and deployed to Afghanistan in this past January, the Army said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered U.S. and state flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff on June 27 in Sanchez's honor.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my condolences to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Specialist Sanchez Jr.," Cuomo said. "We will remember and honor this Fort Drum soldier and we are grateful for his service to our country."

Among Sanchez's awards and decorations are the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and many more, according to Fort Drum's public affairs office.

Sanchez leaves behind his wife, mother, father, sister, and brother, the Army said.
