Worker slightly injured in JFK Airport terminal demolition

Posted: Updated:

The Port Authority says a construction worker was slightly injured during demolition of a departures runway at vacant Terminal 3 at John F. Kennedy International Airport Sunday morning.

A spokesman for the PA said the worker was hit in the leg by falling debris at around 10:00 a.m. and that the worker did not appear to be seriously injured. The worker was said to be walking with a slight limp afterward.

The terminal, known as the Worldport, is recognized for its shape that resembles a flying saucer.

Worldport was built more than 50 years ago and the terminal once housed Pan American World Airways. Delta Air Lines began using it in 1991 after Pan American stopped operations, but left the terminal last month.

There are plans that call for the terminal to be used for parking airplanes.

The first weekday test of the closed, northbound Pulaski Skyway wasn't much different from any other Monday. An estimated 40,000 motorists who take the Skyway toward Jersey City and Manhattan every day are now forced to find an alternate route. All northbound lanes were closed on Saturday for two-years during a rehabilitation project on the 82 year old span.
