SUN CITY, Ariz. -

Police have arrested a man who broke into a home in Sun City. In this case, the homeowner fought back and shot the man.

It's hard to imagine how any of us would react waking up in the middle of the night to find someone with a gun in your home trying to rob you.

But this suspect picked the wrong home. The homeowner has law enforcement training and a gun, and he used that to fight back.

Video shows the suspect face down on a golf course in Sun City, surrounded by Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies. They say he's the suspect in a home invasion early Friday at a home only a few blocks away.

People who saw this guy walking around the golf course knew something was up.

"He was walking by us real fast, and kind of shady looking, he was all dirty," says Brian, a witness. "And he walked around the corner and I looked at his hand again and it was red, with a cloth and there was blood all up his hand."

This started around 2 a.m. The couple living here was sound asleep when a man armed with a gun broke in.

The homeowner, Dave Sobley, is a military veteran and an MCSO posse lieutenant. Deputies say he grabbed his gun and shot the intruder, who then ran off.

"I was afraid for my life and my wife's life. I knew if he got us together it may be over," said Sobley.

"I was thinking about my husband. When the shot went off, I did not know who was shot. And my heart stopped, until I heard his voice," said Audrey Sobley, Dave's wife.

The suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Joshua Barnes, had been shot in the hand one time.

The MCSO SWAT team launched a manhunt, including bloodhounds, to track the suspect.

People living along the golf course were surprised to see what was unfolding right in their backyards.

"That was my first glimpse of him was him being pursued, and he just went face down on the edge of the green... I don't think they faceplanted him," says a female resident.

Barnes was taken to the hospital and will be booked into jail once he's released.

"You always think it's going to be somebody else and this time, I'm somebody else," said Dave Sobley, still shaken up.

MCSO says Barnes was looking for gold. The Sobleys were not hurt in the break-in.
