WHITEHAVEN, Tenn. (FOX13) -

An early morning fire at the Highland Meadows Apartment complex in Whitehaven injured two people, including a firefighter, and left 18 homeless.

The fire was first reported just after 4 a.m., when a fire started in one of the units and quickly spread.

Memphis Fire Department battled the two-alarm fire for more than an hour before finally putting it out.

A firefighter was injured on the scene with a neck injury and was transported to The MED. A resident was also injured after jumping out the window. Both are expected to recover.

Memphis Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by an unattended lit candle.

The Red Cross is helping those families who lost their homes.
