Start up business opportunity: Raising tarantulas

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

In this post-2008 entrepreneurial economy, people are finding ways to make money, like say in spiders.

"Actually I have arachnophobia," said Cheyenne.

So it makes perfect sense that she would handle a fanged, hairy arachnid named Charlotte.

"I love her," she said, even after being bit, twice.

"My daughter's spider Charlotte, she's kind of mean. She has an attitude problem, but mine, Isabel, she's like big and fat and lazy, and she just wants to chill," said Wendy.

Mom and daughter are so smitten they want thousands of tarantulas in their house. Doesn't everyone?

"It's just like any other business. When you advertise your business, you put it on the Internet and people buy them up like that," Wendy said. "If 400 or 500 of the eggs survive, at $20 to $30 a spider, that's a lot of money."

Breeding tarantulas for fun and profit, a mother-daughter business venture in addition to their tattooing.

How does one go from being a tattoo artist to breeding tarantulas?

"The tarantulas just kind of come with the territory. I think a lot of tattoo artists have like weird animals. We're kind of like different people," Wendy said.

All they need now is to get a male tarantula.

"After they mate, the female will kill him and wrap his body up and store it for the babies until they're born, and then she'll feed her babies the male body," Cheyenne said.

So after breeding is complete, they will rescue the male and there will be some down time waiting for arachnid-palooza.

Right now the baseball diamond at the old Tiger Stadium is being used by little leaguers and even some vintage baseball teams. But that could change, even before this season is over.
