Many in Southaven are starting to wonder if the Outlet Shops of the Mid-South isn't just turning into DeSoto County's version of Memphis' Bass Pro Shop's deal.
Just when is it going to open and is it really going to open any time soon?
"I guess people forget how long and how hard we worked on the Southaven Town Center again, seven years in the development phase and to expect this to happen in two years would have been just short of a miracle, " Mayor Greg Davis said.
Aldermen quiet on Southaven outlet mall
Proposed mall sows derision in Southaven
Mayor Davis says the city may have set too lofty a goal on groundbreaking, and even that is out of the city's hands at this point.
"I do think the city has done all we can do," the mayor said. "I do think that if something happens and the developer falls through, I think there is another developer in the wings."
Mayor Davis doesn't have an estimate of when ground will be broken or when the mall will open. According to Davis, the retail market is volatile and the decisions are now left up to the developer and the land owner.
The site for the proposed mall currently is just north of I-55 and Church.
"What the city of Southaven needs to be careful of is there is a lot of land available around there that this site could be moved to."
