1 dead after minivan, truck collide in Chandler

Updated:
CHANDLER, Ariz. -

A 49-year-old man is dead after a minivan and a pickup truck carrying a trailer smashed into each other near McQueen and Ray Road late Thursday night.

Chandler police say a 49-year-old man was driving a truck with four passengers, including a 6-year-old boy and a 13-year-old, and a total of six people were riding in the minivan.

According to officers, one of the vehicles apparently ran a red light, but investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.

The truck driver died at the scene.

One male passenger from the minivan was flown to a hospital with a severe head injury and is in critical condition. Police say he had just returned to the US from Iraq within the past 10 days.

Two other passengers in the minivan had minor injuries; the children in the truck weren't injured.

According to police, impairment may have been a factor with the driver of the truck, but it wasn't a factor for the minivan driver.

Investigators are still looking into the damage, impact area and other factors to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

No names have been released.
