FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - New Mexico's largest social detoxification center is preparing to close its doors after more than 20 years of serving a largely American Indian population.

Jay Azua is the program manager for the Na'Nizhoozhi Center Inc. in Gallup, a city that borders the Navajo Nation. He says the center is looking at shutting down at the end of the month because it no longer has enough money.

Talk of the closure has prompted concerns among police that alcohol-related violent crime and deaths could increase and hospital emergency rooms will become overwhelmed.

The city and McKinley County have a transition plan that would leave in place protective custody and detoxification services for six months. County attorney Doug Decker says that could happen immediately upon NCI's closure or within days.
