DETROIT (WJBK) -

Two men were arrested in Detroit on Wednesday for stealing gas not from the pump, but rather from the tanks underground.

"I got suspicious. I told the midnight guy to watch outside, to keep watching if somebody park above the tanks," said Samer Bazzi, manager of the BP gas station located on the 1700 block of Grand River.

Inside a van was allegedly an elaborate operation to haul away free fuel, a problem that cost the gas station $2,000 just days ago.

"We have a monitor in the back. It monitor how much gas you have in the ground. So I was looking at it. We were like ... about 600 gallons short," Bazzi explained.

On Wednesday morning, Bazzi said a "green van stopped exactly above the tanks."

Police said they discovered two men with hoses extending right into the ground through a hole in the bottom of the van. Their suspected goal was to steal more 200 gallons of gas. With today's prices, that would be worth more than $1,000. We were told they were caught after pumping 108 gallons.

"It makes you angry because gas is expensive, and it makes you lose a lot of money," Bazzi said.
