AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

In a combined effort between police units from Auburn Hills, Troy and Bloomfield Township, officers were cracking down Tuesday on aggressive driving, including speeding, tailgating and improper lane changes.

Even though one particular driver was clocked at 91 miles per hour, Sergeant Rick Leonard with the Southeast Oakland County Crash Investigation Team only ticketed him for going five over the speed limit. There was a good reason.

"The purpose of our campaign today is awareness and enforcement education. He had a good driving record. He was driving excessively fast, but he wasn't one of the ones we found weaving in or out of traffic or tailgating," Leonard explained. "I gave him a citation, which for me is the important action. The punitive aspect of it I'll leave up to the judge and magistrate. Our job's education and enforcement."

The men and women on this task force are the same people who contact families in the middle of the night after their loved ones were killed on the road. Speed can be a major factor in those cases.

"The hardest thing that I've done in my 17 years here with Auburn Hills is delivering those death and serious injury notifications. So if I never have to do it again, that will be a great thing," Leonard said. "We see the aftermath of these driving decisions and the results of the crash that occurs."

The teamwork formed by the different jurisdictions has become necessary. Most, if not all, cities have been faced with budget cuts, meaning less police on the street. So this is a way to more efficiently protect and serve.

Meanwhile, Leonard said there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop.

"The reality of my job is that the vast majority of the people we deal with are good, hard-working, honest people who have just maybe made a poor driving decision today, but you always have to be ready for the unexpected, so nothing is routing," he explained.

Eleven officers participated in the enforcement crackdown from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. During that time, 43 vehicles were stopped and 30 drivers were given speeding citations. Two vehicles were clocked at 104 miles per hour.

Police patrolled I-75 from Baldwin Road in Auburn Hills to 14 Mile Road in Troy.
