Crazy ants coming to the Mid-south?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

A new ant species with a taste for electronics is invading several southern states. They are called "crazy ants". Yes, that is the technical name for the species of ant.

The crazy ant, just like a lot of scary bugs, comes out of South America and has made its way to central America and somehow leaped frogged to the United States. It is showing up in Texas, Louisiana, southern Mississippi and large parts of Florida.

Apparently these ants are kind of like the fire ants except that these guys are getting into phones, laptops and any consumer electronics.

There is no known insecticide that has any effect on the crazy ant. However, there may be a way to protect your cell phone from invasion; a good phone case.

By the time the crazy ants reach the mid-south water tight boxes will probably be available for most cell phones.

Scott Burnett of AAA Termite and Pest Control says, "they are not here yet. I talked to Dr. Karen Vale at UT this morning and they have not had any confirmed cases in Tennessee right now."

What are here now are those fire ants and they could be just an early warning of what's to come with their cousins the crazy ants.

Scott says, "You see the ants start to come out and they are starting to come up the stick. And they are going to boil out and so if you step on that or a kid sticks a stick into that playing with the bugs they are going to get a very unhappy surprise."
