West side Detroit church's rooftop A/C unit gutted

There's a special place in hell for people who steal from churches, and you can bet its not air conditioned, but it was the A/C unit that was targeted at The R.O.A.D. Church on Detroit's west side.

"We look up on the rooftop, and we see the whole unit busted wide open, and it's gone. The whole unit is gone," said Pastor Charleston Day.

Someone had gutted the A/C unit, but how? The church gate to the rooftop was still locked, and there were no tracks or scraps left behind.

"So it can't be someone who doesn't know what they're doing. Has to be a professional job," Day said.

Especially since the A/C unit was 30 feet off the ground. It wasn't locked up. As Day explained, the church thought "it's kind of like impossible to get on top of a roof and take the whole unit."

This is not the first time an A/C unit has been stolen on the church's block. Schaefer Fish across the street has been hit seven times in four months. Every time the thieves went up on the roof and then disappeared without a trace.

"They're taking the copper out. They're taking whatever they can get out of it, making $100 while I've got $30,000 worth of damages," said Ahmad Srour.

Schaefer Fish is now in danger of closing. Srour uses four compressors for his ice machines. Without them, a lot of seafood goes to waste.

"$15,000 worth of shrimp, crab legs, oysters, fish, chicken, everything," he said.

If you walk down Schaefer, you will hear similar stories from Family Dollar, a nearby laundromat and now the church. It's also a story insurance companies have heard before, which means these businesses are likely on their own.

"The insurance won't cover it anymore. They won't cover anything in the City of Detroit anymore," Srour said.

"We're going to have to survive with fans and try to figure it out," Day said.
