Mayor Nutter Addresses School Budget Cuts

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Students may soon see fewer teachers, aides, and counselors at Philadelphia schools. Mayor Michael Nutter addressed the media today, hoping to prevent deep cuts from going into effect.

He's calling this "The Week of Action," calling on lawmakers to try to prevent schools from losing their special classes and after school programs.

Last Friday nearly 38 hundred school district employees were handed pink slips.

The district says a $304 million budget gap is forcing officials to take drastic measures to save what they can.

The school district is requesting 60 million dollars from the city, 120 million dollars from the state -- and will try to cut 120 million from its budget by re-negotiating union contracts.
