Union Beach, NJ received little flooding from storm

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Many residents in New Jersey prepared themselves for the worst during Friday's storm but on Saturday, they got the chance to survey the damage.

Union Beach was one of areas hit hard during Hurricane Sandy. But luckily they got a break during Friday night's rain storm -- not too much damage or flooding.

Unfortunately, it was towns' further inland that really took a beating.

Saturday it was business as usual at Tony's Lunch Truck in Union Beach, after a long night.

"It was a downpour. It was torrential, but it clears up quick," said Tony Provenzano, owner of Tony's Lunch Truck.

Provenzano says other than some flooding on Front Street, which has since cleared up, Union Beach was spared during Friday night's heavy rain fall.

That was not the case during Hurricane Sandy.

"So many people were just so depressed, they don't want to see any more flooding," said Laura Hallam, Union Beach resident.

"Well, we were watching and it said that it was going to kind of blow by this area -- so thank God, it's been spared," added Tara Neci, Union Beach resident.

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey in Hillside wasn't as lucky, it was flooded out with several feet of water during Friday night's storm.

Michael Jordan, who works there, says he had to act quickly.

"As the water kept rising, we knew we had to try to get people out of here because we knew we couldn't get our vehicles in and out of here anymore," said Jordan of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.

And over in Hoboken, which was underwater during Sandy, had only minor flooding Friday night, but still enough to get one woman riled up.

"I have to cross the street, go over and it always floods, so I hate that."

Lucky for her, all of the rain water from Hoboken has drained, and we have a sunny weekend ahead.

Like most soon-to-be third graders, Sonja knows what she's looking for when it comes to back-to-school shopping. For kids trying to be fashionable -- and parents looking to keep it affordable -- there's the Ocean County Hunger Relief Warehouse in Toms River, New Jersey. It's basically a huge thrift shop.
