DETROIT (WJBK) -

33-year-old Franklin Williams of Detroit is in need of a wheelchair ramp. The former member of the National Guard is living with multiple sclerosis.

"It's terrible because I'm so used to my son being so active and involved in the family," said Carolyn Marshall. "It's helpful to have the chair, but we can't go anywhere with the chair."

But for this family, angels have come along in the form of Wayne State University students, who are partnering with Rebuilding Together Detroit and the MS Society to help people like Williams.

"I was really looking for a way to directly impact lives," said Gino Etta with Rebuilding Together's WSU Chapter, which was founded less than a year ago. "A lot of people are unaware that there's citizens living right now without heat, with leaks in their roofs."

The front steps on Williams' home will be replaced with a ramp to allow him more freedom.

"This ramp is going to just make it so much easier for her to get him to doctors' appointments and just get in and out of the house and for him, too. He'll be able to actually get out of the house on his own," Etta said.

"I am so thankful," Marshall said.

"I'm going everywhere," Williams said.

Rebuilding Together is building the ramp right now, and they expect to have it installed within the next month.
