Judge Dan Michael suppressed the statement given April 5 by
a 14-year-old who was arrested and charged for setting the fire that killed his
mother, Gwendolyn Wallace.
Court documents read that Jonathan Ray, 14, "was unable to voluntarily and knowingly waive his Miranda rights and consent to a police interview without an attorney." The documents continue that Ray's statement was "unconstitutionally obtained" and, therefore, must be suppressed.
