Germantown Horse Show celebrates its 65th anniversary

Posted: Updated:

The Germantown Charity Horse Show is ready to saddle up and ride for a good cause.

It's the fifteenth year the show has sponsored and raised money for the Exchange Club Center. It's celebrating its 65th anniversary.

If you have never been to the Germantown Horse Show the first thing you will notice upon arriving at the show grounds, just down the street from Germantown High School, is that along with all the beautiful horses you will see mostly women.

Sure there are a few guys, but mostly women.  Something Phil Devita says has been evolving over the past thirty years. "Originally the Olympics and higher end show jumping was always done by military equestrian riders from different countries around the world and it was mostly male dominated and in the last twenty five to thirty years I think the women have taken over."

Devita grew up around horses. His father was a horse trainer but he says the fact that females far outnumber males in this sport is largely an economic factor.

Devita says, "the men if they rode as a young man they get a job a career and move on and have a family and then their the money maker and the kids and/or wife ends up doing the riding and I think that's a part of why so many women and females are in the horse industry."

No matter what the reason is, if you're wondering where all the ladies are this weekend in Memphis, it is the Germantown Horse Show.

You say you know nothing about a hunter jumper horse show? Well it's really very simple. "We got two different types of jumpers. Here we have the hunters and jumpers. The hunters would be like watching figure skating. They are being judged on a performance, their agility and their style form. The jumpers are jumping clear rounds not knocking any fences down. Not having any refusals and speed against the clock<" says Devita.

Another thing that's great about the Germantown Horse Show is how close you can get to the athletes. "If you've never seen show jumping if you've never seen these horses jumping you can't miss it. It's the place to be in town right now."

Young men, if you like barbeque, Pronto pumps and all kinds of other good food; watching great looking horses and oh yeah girls, head to Germantown.
