One Memphian has found himself in the middle of protests in Turkey.
He found himself in the thick of the protests Monday while eating at a cafe in Istanbul. He took cell phone video of what was going on around him.
He says things were tense as protesters clashed with law enforcement. Protesters overturned cars and buses and raided ATMs. Police used tear gas against the protesters.
As it turned to evening, the Memphian headed back to his hotel, but encountered more protesting along the way.
Just being near the tear gas, he says he felt the irritation in his throat and eyes. He was able to take cell phone video from his hotel balcony of tear gas being fired by law enforcement.
These protests started as a reaction to trees in a public park being bulldozed in Istanbul. Police used tear gas on the peaceful sit in Friday and the protest has grown into a full blown protest of the prime minister.
So far, one person has died in the four day ordeal.
