Starbucks bans smoking within 25 feet of store

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

For those who smoke beware if you're sitting outside a Starbucks this weekend – don't light that cigarette.

The coffee giant has banned smoking from its outdoor sitting areas and for those customers who enjoy a smoke with your Starbucks coffee -- that's fine, just not within 25 feet of the store.

A Starbucks spokesperson said the company's existing no smoking policy will be expanded to include outdoor seating areas.

The ban goes into effect on Saturday.

"I think it's great. I'm not a smoker and I don't particularly like smoking, so for me, I think it's great and I think it's annoying smoking outside the door," said one Starbucks customer.

The ban will apply to the 7,000 cafes owned and operated by Starbucks Corporation, whether they have outdoor seating areas or not.

New York City already has a ban on smoking in bars and restaurants, in city parks and on city beaches.

"I don't know how they can enforce something that's outside you know? Inside it's their place" Absolutely, but something outside on the other hand it's always a good thing -- the less smoke the better," added another customer.

It will be up to Starbucks baristas to enforce the rule, raising the question whether they will come out on to the sidewalk here in the city to tell you to stop smoking.

Regardless, for New Yorkers who drink Starbucks coffee, just grab your Grande and go have a smoke somewhere else.
