Frankie Conklin, a fixture of the University of Memphis and the city of Memphis' cheerleading community, has passed away.
Conklin, who was the director of the Tiger Spirit squads since 2004, died Monday morning at the age of 53.
His squads won 12 national titles over the years. Mr. Conklin also owned the Memphis Elite All-Stars cheer and dance program that awards scholarships to graduating seniors.
With more than 32 years experience in the cheerleading industry, Mr. Conklin is known throughout the country.
"We are sad to say that we lost a true pioneer of the cheerleading and dance team industry," the Universal Dance Association said in a statement. "The impact he has made will surely live on."
Funeral details are pending.
