Rangers busy on Georgia waterways this weekend

Posted: Updated:

It was a busy Sunday afternoon on Lake Allatoona and other state waterways for rangers with the Department of Natural Resources.

A spokesperson for DNR says they rangers responded the Highway 41 Day Use area in Bartow County around 1 p.m. after two personal water crafts collided in the water. A 19-year-old man, a passenger on one of the vessel, was injured. He refused to be transported to the hospital. The operator of one of the personal water crafts was charged with following too closely.

About four hours later, rangers responded to the waters around Red Top Mountain State Park after a boat was swamped by the wake of a larger passing vessel. The boat eventually capsized. Both occupants were wearing life jackets and make it to shore. The boat will have to be fished from the water by a local boat recovery service.

Officials say they responded to one drowning this weekend in Augusta. A 19-year-old man was running from the police and tried to swim across a canal, but ended up going under and drowning.

Officials also said Sunday that the investigation into Saturday's hit and run on Lake Lanier is still ongoing and they could not confirm any arrests.

DNR says they have been busy with other boating incidents, accident and BUIs, but have not responded to any other fatalities on Georgia's waterways.
