Community rallies to help 2-year-old Henry County girl

Posted: Updated:
LOCUST GROVE, Ga. -

A community has rallied around a 2-year-old Henry County girl who is in the fight of her life.

Katie Graham has Mitochondrial disease that affects her blood cells and often leads to an early death. It prevents the young girl's body from turning food into energy and has led to a loss of her speech, vision and hearing.

Her mother, Teresa, keeps her on a strict schedule at their Locust Grove home. Katie can only go outside for 5 minutes at a time and must sleep for 16 hours each day.

There is no cure for her disease, but her loving family and community are holding out hope that the blue-eyed toddler will have more life in her than her doctors say she may.

The community is also rallying to the family's aid by helping to raise money to pay for part of Katie's treatments not covered by insurance. It is support that her mother says will help extend her only child's life a little longer.

The next big project is on Saturday. A rummage sale and raffle will be held at the Fayette Shrine Club located at 205 Ellis Drive in Fayetteville. For more information, visit the Hope for Katie Facebook page.
