Memphis' Marc Gasol named to 2012-13 All-NBA Second Team

Posted: Updated:

Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol was named to the 2012-13 All-NBA Second Team, the league announced today, his first career All-NBA selection.

Gasol (7-1, 264) displayed his all-around versatility in leading Memphis to a franchise-record 56 wins during the regular season, averaging 14.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, a career-high 4.0 assists, 1.00 steals and 1.74 blocks on .494 shooting in 35.0 minutes in 80 games (all starts). He was one of three NBA players (Kevin Durant, Josh Smith) to tally at least 600 rebounds, 300 assists and 100 blocks this season.

As he has done in each season since joining the team, the 28-year-old led the club in blocks per game, anchoring a Grizzlies defense that allowed the fewest points per game to opponents (89.3) of any NBA team since the 2005-06 season. He also paced the team in free throw percentage, shooting a career-best .848 from the foul line.

After guiding the Grizzlies to their most-successful regular season ever, Gasol has posted 17.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.15 blocks on .463 shooting in 40.0 minutes over 13 postseason games, helping Memphis advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history.

Memphis eliminated the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the Western Conference Playoffs, becoming the first team in NBA history to win four consecutive games by double digits in a postseason series after losing the first two games of the series. Gasol averaged 17.8 points and 9.0 rebounds on .510 shooting in 37.3 minutes in the final four games (all Grizzlies victories).

The Grizzlies then ousted the defending Western Conference Champion Oklahoma City Thunder in five games in the Western Conference Semifinals. Gasol powered Memphis with 19.4 points and 8.4 rebounds on .486 shooting in 41.9 minutes during the conference semifinals, scoring 20-or-more points in each of the first four matchups.

For his efforts, Gasol has received numerous accolades this season, including the 2012-13 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award and a selection to the 2012-13 NBA All-Defensive Second Team within the past month.

Memphis has increased its regular season winning percentage in every season since acquiring the draft rights to Gasol, along with two first round draft picks and three players, from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for his older brother Pau Gasol and a second round draft pick on Feb. 1, 2008.

The Barcelona, Spain native, who played high school ball for Lausanne in Memphis, is the first player in Grizzlies history to be named to the All-NBA Second Team and the second player in team history to receive All-NBA distinction (Zach Randolph, Third Team in 2010-11).

The All-NBA Teams were chosen by a panel of 119 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. The media voted for All-NBA First, Second and Third Teams by position with points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis. Gasol received a total of 295 points from the voting panel, including 38 first place votes.

The All-NBA First Team consists of 2012-13 MVP LeBron James of the Miami Heat and Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder at forward, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers and Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs at center.
Joining Gasol on the All-NBA Second Team are Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks and Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers at forward, as well as Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs and Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder at guard.

The All-NBA Third Team includes David Lee of the Golden State Warriors and Paul George of the Indiana Pacers at forward, Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and James Harden of the Houston Rockets at guard and Dwight Howard of the Los Angeles Lakers at center.

Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph (45 points) and guard Mike Conley (two points) also appeared in the final voting tallies.
