Local EMTs To Help Oklahoma Tornado Victims and Crews

Posted: Updated:
BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. -

Bucks County EMT Bryan Elwell is heading out to Oklahoma to help assist overwhelmed emergency responders dealing with the deadly tornado aftermath in Moore, just outside Oklahoma City.

He's prepared for anything-and-everything assignments.

"Don't matter what it is," he said.  "I can move trash and do rescue as well.  That's fine.  I just want to get down there and give back."

Elwell, a longtime volunteer firefighter, is bringing his friend and fellow EMT James "JR" Smith along for the operation.

"I saw that yesterday on the news and it brought a tear to my eye," he said of the broadcast reports covering the disaster.  "People lost everything."

Both helped emergency crews in North Jersey following Hurricane Sandy and say that experience gives them an idea of what to encounter in The Sooner State.

They expect to be assisting for at least a week and only had one major concern before leaving: the cost of fuel, estimated at $600 for a round trip.

They received donations from neighbors and members of the public who heard about their mission.

"Anything we can do to help is understandable," said one neighbor that donated $50.

Elwell and Smith raised about $400 and plan on footing the rest of the bill.  They say they will cover food on their own and plan on sleeping in their car unless other crew facilities become available.

Driving all night, they expect to reach Oklahoma Wednesday afternoon and will get their assignments from an air force base near the disaster area.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
