Job-seeking tips for recent college grads

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's college graduation time, but before many graduates celebrate, they've got to focus on what comes next.  With a tight job market, many new grads are getting a dose of reality when it comes to trying to land their first job.

Recent Georgia Southern grad Ashley Miller is now back at home in Stone Mountain.  He's spending lots of time online looking for a job.  Miller earned a degree in chemistry, and like many in the Class of 2013, he's facing tough competition for work.

The unemployment rate for new grads is at 8.8 percent, compared to 8.2 percent statewide.  Sharon Holliday of the Georgia Department of Labor says networking is 85 percent successful for those seeking work, and younger job seekers should seek help networking from their parents.

Getting advice and direction from those in your desired industry is step one.  Miller is also connecting with alumni to find out what companies are looking for someone with his skill set.

Experts say you should expand your search to include multiple fields.  Your first job may not be your dream job, so keep your mind open.  And, if you have to relocate, make sure your new salary pays you enough to sustain you in that region.

Now is also a good time to do a social media audit.  Employers also often look at your personal sites to gain insight on you.  Set your privacy controls and take down any pictures that could paint you in a less-than-flattering light.
