Grizzlies Fever is getting some in the creative spirit.
Sherry Pilkinton has been printing custom shirts out of her home since May 2011 when her son's high school lacrosse team could not find cool lacrosse shirts locally. Since then, and since the Grizzlies' growing success, lately she's received a lot of orders with original designs for Memphis Grizzlies gear.
"Those have gone like crazy because we've got some really cool designs with some designers that have worked with us," says Pilkinton, creator of Rydo Apparel.
Pilkinton starts with a digital graphic or picture on a special program that exports it to a printer especially for shirts. The printer is environmentally friendly by using water-based inks.
After a few preparations to the printer and shirt, and with the click of a button, Pilkinton creates a custom shirt in minutes.
Two of her custom-designed shirts – an "I Don't Bluff" design featuring Zach Randolph and "901" design featuring Tony Allen – reached nationwide popularity. She received more than 100 orders for these designs in a week and a half.
"They're Googling ‘I Don't Bluff' and these shirts are popping up and they're ordering. I mean, I'm getting orders from Massachusetts, from Texas, from Florida," says Pilkinton, "It is so cool to see people from all over the country ordering the Memphis Grizzlies shirts, so it's really amazing."
She says her designs are showing up on passersby and even local familiar faces.
"To see your design on some strange person that you don't know who they are, it's just extremely exhilarating. You get chills the first time you see your own design on a shirt and someone else is wearing it," says Pilkinton.
With her and the Grizzlies' growing success, can customers expect a custom Western Conference Finals shirt?
"Oh yeah, we're working on one right now actually," says Pilkinton, "We've got a couple designs in the works, haven't finished it yet, but we're still working on a couple of cool things."
