Rebuilt Lavallette boardwalk opens

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Sue Ellen Turner, a Lavallette, N.J., lifer, loves documenting her ever-changing life on the beach through pictures. With her electric blue point-and-shoot camera, she documented the rebuilding of Lavallette after Hurricane Sandy, including its mile-long boardwalk.

"Every weekend that I would come, a little more would be done," she said. "They were working on Saturdays they were working on Sundays."

All of that hard work culminated in the opening of the newly built boardwalk. Gov. Chris Christie was on hand as the last piece of wood was nailed down. The boardwalk, which took about seven months to rebuild, cost $1.3 million; 75 percent will be reimbursed to the town by FEMA.

"This is the first symbol for us of making sure this week that everybody knows that the Jersey Shore is open for the summer and ready to receive our customers," Christie said.

The governor wasn't the only one talking up the shore. Hundreds of locals came out to celebrate.

For decades, making some quick cash was the main drive behind so many who took the ride down the parkway to Atlantic City. But with so much to choose from nowadays, it looks like Atlantic City is in a lot of trouble.
