Winning Powerball Ticket Sold in Florida

Posted: Updated:

Someone in Zephyrhills has more than 590 million reasons to be thankful after hitting the largest ever Powerball jackpot.

Lottery officials said Sunday someone bought the winning ticket at the Publix grocery store on Gall Boulevard.

The news created a buzz outside the business that lasted throughout the day.

"These didn't win. No winner. No winner. No winner," Shawn Tenryk said as he flipped through a handful of Powerball tickets, adding he expected to have a little more luck. "I figured the sound would go off, the bells and the confetti would come down."

The jackpot reached $590.5 million before the drawing Saturday night; the lump sum payout is $376 million. Powerball officials said the odds of someone matching the numbers was at around 80 percent because of the number of tickets sold.

The Publix that sold the ticket will receive $85,000. Although shoppers Sunday didn't have the winning numbers, they were thrilled to see Zephyrhills on the national map.

"It's like I know the person. It's just so close," said David Albertson, a Zephyrhills resident.

"You always hear about so embody else in some other town. When it's right in your town, right in your neighborhood, you're just happy for somebody," Tanryk said.

The winner hasn't yet come forward and officials haven't put a timetable on when that might happen.
