Shot Fired As Thief Steals From Off-Duty Officer's Shed

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Investigators say a police-involved shooting occurred early Thursday morning after a trio of thieves broke into an off-duty officer's shed outside a home in Northeast Philadelphia.

SkyFOX was live over the scene of the incident, which happened after 3 a.m. on the 500 block of Robbins Avenue in Lawncrest.

Police are not sure if any of the intruders were struck by gunfire or not.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported that the first person to spot the thieves at work was a resident who lives between the homes of two police officers.

The neighbor saw it was one of the officers' sheds that was being broken into and called 9-1-1 along with ringing the off-duty officer's phone to alert him.

One of the thieves was seen casually walking down the street with a bike, and another was pushing an air compressor. They had already taken a chainsaw and weedwacker and stashed them down the block.

When the thieves returned to steal more, that's when the off-duty and uniformed officers showed up.

One off-duty tackled and got into a struggle with one of the thieves but lost him in the fight. One gunshot was discharged during the struggle, Keeley reported.

When uniformed officers showed up, the off-duty apparently had to raise hands and identify himself.

The police department's Internal Affairs Bureau came out to investigate because at least one of the officers fired a shot.

The search for the three thieves, who a neighbor described as being large, goes on.
