2 gun barrels from WWII ships to be in memorial at Capitol

PHOENIX -

A piece of history will soon make its permanent home at the Capitol building: two gun barrels, one from the USS Missouri and the other from the USS Arizona.

Volunteers spent hours restoring the barrels, and Saturday the hard work was shown off in a special ceremony to honor fallen soldiers.

For years, two gun barrels, one from the USS Arizona and the other from the USS Missouri, sat abandoned in an old navy shipyard.

"A lot of effort has gone into getting them back to looking something like they would've when they were on the ships," said Secretary of State Ken Bennett.

Soon the two gun barrels will be the prominent centerpiece to a future WWII memorial at the state Capitol.

Bennett helped spearhead the effort.

"One is the last remaining gun barrel from the battleship Arizona. It was removed from the Arizona just prior to it sinking at Pearl Harbor," said Bennett.

Bennett says it's amazing to have such a piece of history in the state.

"The navy was very generous to give us both of these barrels, kind of representing book ends of the war, the beginning of the war with Pearl Harbor and the end of the war with the Japanese surrendering in 1945," said Bennett.

There were some special guests at Saturday's event; Bunky Snider was at Pearl Harbor.

"Do you remember that day? I never forget it. I'll bet, I'll bet," said Snider, a WWII survivor.

For those in attendance, they say the gun barrels will stand as a representation of all those lost in battle.

"I think it's good for all of the tributes we have to everyone that's suffered blood, sweat and tears for our country all these years," said retired US Air Force Maj. Gen. Carl Schneider.

The dedication for the memorial will take place December 7 at the Capitol.

The memorial will also feature the names of all those from Arizona who lost their lives in World War II.
