Chelsea underground transformer fire

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Flames shot up from under ground through a grate on a street in Chelsea Thursday evening.

At first, firefighters stood at a distance because of the concern that it was either an electrical fire or a natural gas fire. However, officials later said the fire was coming from an underground transformer on West 25th Street.

Con Edison emergency crews responded to the scene.

Authorities called for the evacuation of nearby buildings.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.
