Vandals damage veterans' memorial in Henry County

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. -

Police hope to find vandals responsible for damage at a veterans' memorial in Henry County.

The vandals targeted an 800-pound, $3,000 bench with an engraving that honors a Henry County veteran at the Veterans Wall of Honor in Henry County's Heritage Park.

A maintenance worker discovered the damage late last week.

Rick Yarbrough often comes to the memorial and donated money for one of the other benches.

"Just to come over here and see a bench that's broken, lack of respect, for somebody to destroy it, just blows my mind," said Yarbrough.

The Veterans Wall of Honor sits on a two-and-a-half acre site in the McDonough park. Community donations largely paid for the memorial, which was dedicated in 2008.

"The American veteran is a hero, a hero to almost everybody, in almost everybody's eyes. And that's why this piece of land is here," said Jim Joyce of Henry County Parks and Recreation.

Henry County Police believe the damage occurred Wednesday night or early Thursday morning last week. They think teenagers may be responsible.

Sgt. Joey Smith is asking anyone with information on the vandalism to come forward.

"We're asking for the public's help. If they can help us with any information, they may not think it's important, but it is to us and hopefully someone might have seen something out of the ordinary here at the park and we'll take any information we can get and work it," Smith said

The parks department hopes a replacement bench will be ready for the monument by Memorial Day.

Police say charges stemming from the vandalism could include felony damage to government property.
