Names of secretly recorded NY lawmakers released

Posted: Updated:

A federal judge has released the names of nine politicians and political operatives, including six New York state senators and a New York City councilman, secretly recorded by former state Sen. Shirley Huntley, who is facing prison in a corruption case.

Huntley is due to be sentenced Thursday after admitting to embezzling close to $88,000 from a state-funded sham nonprofit. She apparently recorded the fellow lawmakers and political operatives in a bid for leniency in her own case.

Prosecutors objected to the release of the names. In a filing this week, federal authorities said they are investigating some of the officials heard on the recordings but did not specify which ones.

  • Sen. Malcolm Smith; under indictment
  • Sen. John Sampson; under indictment
  • Sen. Eric Adams; former NYPD captain and candidate for Brooklyn borough president
  • Sen. Ruth Hassel-Thompson
  • Sen. Jose Peralta
  • Sen. Valmanette Montgomery
  • Council Member Ruben Wills; former aide to Senator Huntley
  • Melvin Lowe; former political consultant and associate of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman
  • Curtis Taylor; former press aide to Senator Smith
