3 LI national sites get federal Sandy aid

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (AP) - Fire Island, the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site and the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex are among the sites receiving federal funding to help repair damage from Superstorm Sandy.

The Interior Department on Tuesday released $475 million in relief funding for 234 projects.

Fire Island and Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay will get more than $14 million.

Fire Island suffered $10 million in damages to sand dunes, beaches, boardwalks and visitor facilities.

Newsday says the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge will get $6.3 million for repairs to debris removal, roof repair and generator and electrical improvements.

    Police on Long Island are asking for the public's help in finding a forklift thief.  The bright yellow vehicle went missing Monday between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. from its parking spot near a building in Riverhead. One or more people used a flatbed tow truck with a white cab to remove the Caterpillar forklift.

    A Queens teenager who admitted smoking marijuana and speeding before crashing into a tree in 2012, killing four of his friends on Long Island, was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison on Tuesday.  The judge decided against a four-year youthful offender sentence for Joseph Beer, who was 17 at the time of the crash.
