One Lane Reopens 7 Hours After Lard Spill On I-76 West

Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A tractor-trailer accident from 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night is still causing huge problems on the roads Wednesday morning.

CHECK: Latest Traffic Reports

Westbound Interstate 76 was closed for hours between 30th Street (exit 345) and Interstate 676 (exit 344) after the tractor-trailer split and spilled its load of lard-like shortening.

The beef fat that was stored in boxes, rather than cans, apparently for industrial use. Many boxes that were thrown over the side of the highway are still there.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley has been reporting live from the scene, where crews have been struggling to clean up the mess. They put sand down on it, but there still appeared to be a coating of the treacherous slop on the highway.

Just before 7 a.m., authorities decided to open just the highway's left lane so some traffic could get going past the scene.

However, the ramp from the Schuylkill westbound to the Vine Street Expressway into Center City is still covered by the Crisco-like substance and closed. It's just under the ramp above from 30th Street leading onto the westbound Schuylkill.

This is a major problem for thousands now clogging Center City streets trying to get to I-95, New Jersey or anywhere east of the scene, Keeley reported.
