Keeping kids safe from 'strangers'

Posted: Updated:
NORCROSS, Ga. -

As a Cleveland, Ohio community celebrates the return of three young teens missing for 10 years, Good Day Atlanta wants to help you prevent something like that from happening to your child.

We often warn young children about strangers. A Stranger Danger school video helped a Bremen 7-year old remember what to do when a man tried to grab her at a Walmart. But, Sgt. Grogan of the Norcross Police Department says most times, the victim has seen their kidnapper before.

"Most often there is at least some, it could be minimal, interaction between the perpetrator and the victim," said Grogan.

While young children are warned not to talk to strangers, Sgt. Grogan says as children progress into their teens, they become more social and helpful. He says to teach your teens to use their instinct.

"If someone approaches them and it doesn't feel right and the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, you might as well go ahead and assume that they mean you harm," Grogan said.

Sgt. Grogan says when talking to your children of all ages about staying safe, keep it simple.

"In an emergency, pick up the phone and call 911. Tell them where you are and someone will come. Second thing is, just run. Simply put, just run," said Grogan.

Grogan also says to talk to your children about internet and phone safety. Many perpetrators use information posted online to gain access or knowledge about your children. For more safety tips, click here!
