DETROIT (WJBK) -

Erin Eagen and her friend's daughter went to see Taylor Swift at Ford Field on Saturday night.  Arriving around 5:00 p.m. and in a hurry trying to get to a meet and greet, Eagen spent $20 to park a few blocks away on Brush at Division.

"The parking attendant had a vest on," she explained.  "I paid him $20, and he gave me a receipt."

Eagen got a ticket stub to put in her windshield, but didn't realize she had dropped her key.  When she returned hours later around 11:00 p.m. with her sleepy seven-year-old concertgoer, her Cadillac was gone.

"I just turned to the little girl that was with me, and I told her it's okay.  We're going to walk back to Ford Field because we had seen police officers there the whole night, and they'll help us figure out what to do next," Eagen said.

However, she said four different officers just told her to walk to Greektown to get a cab, which she did.

"They told me that I should've paid more money than the $20 that I did pay, and I should've parked in a real lot, which I thought I had done," Eagen said.

Back to that lot.  Eagen had a ticket to park from Handy Parking.  She had paid an attendant, or had she?

Eagen said she later learned from police when she got her car back on Monday that she "paid $20 to a scam artist who was operating an illegal parking lot."

"About 20 minutes after I parked it, one of the men who was operating the lot attempted to steal my car."

Cops caught him in the act.  The car is okay.  It turned out police had impounded the Cadillac while she was at the concert.

After spending $80 for a cab ride and $245 bucks to get her car back, Eagen hopes her story will serve as a warning for others to be careful where you park.

Handy Parking said the lot where Eagen parked isn't one of theirs.  Their attendants always have their license with them, and you can ask to see it.  During big events, that license will often be hanging around their necks.

Ray Scott, deputy director of Detroit's Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Safety Department, also provided Fox 2 with the following statement:

The City of Detroit's Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department issues business licenses to legitimate parking operators and shuts down illegal lots that spring up.~ Citizens should avoid giving money or car keys to anyone who is not wearing or displaying a Parking Lot Attendant I.D. Card, which is issued by the Detroit Police Department.~ If you question whether a parking lot is legitimate,~note the address and call the City's Business License Center at 313-224-3179, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
