Kirk respects state GOP chair's decision to resign

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk says he respects and understands the Illinois Republican Party chairman's decision to step down.

Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady resigned Tuesday, citing his wife's battle with cancer. His decision also comes after attempts to oust him after he supported a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in Illinois.

In a statement Tuesday, Kirk says that Brady has spent the last several years "selflessly serving his community and party." He says he also respects Brady's decision to spend time with his family and offers prayers.

Kirk is the state's highest ranking Republican. Last month he also said publicly that he supports gay marriage.
