"We are very happy about welcoming Southwest Airlines into Memphis International Airport. November 3 will be a great day for all Memphians and the mid-South when that first Southwest Airlines plane touches down at our airport," said Larry Cox, President and CEO of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. "Today's announcement reinforces the messages given to Memphians earlier this year when the AirTran Airways flights to BWI, Chicago and Orlando flights were announced."
"We are excited that Southwest Airlines has decided not only to bring their brand name into Memphis International, but to expand the number of destinations they will serve from Memphis. As I said in February when the August flight additions were announced, this news is a home run for travelers in our region hungry for affordable flight options," added Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Chairman Jack Sammons. "While we celebrate the arrival of this premier aviation brand name to Memphis, we must all also remember that the long-term commitment to Memphis is dependent upon how well these initial flights perform. I have said this many times to many groups across our community over the last few months – Southwest executives remarked to me earlier this year that ‘The more flights we take, the more we get.' This is just the beginning of a great new future for Memphis International as your Airport Authority is laser focused on making MEM the airport of choice for the traveling public from throughout the region."
To celebrate the new service, Southwest Airlines is launching a fare sale, offering nonstop flights starting as low as $79 one-way. These low fares are available for purchase on southwest.com today through Saturday, May 13, 2013, 11:59 p.m.
The new nonstop service offered on both carriers comes as Customers are able to purchase itineraries among the airlines' combined 97 destinations, including international airports, in one transaction.
Beginning Sunday, Nov. 3, Southwest Airlines will fly nonstop:
AirTran will begin service on August 11 between Memphis and Chicago (Midway), Baltimore/Washington, and Orlando. AirTran service will end Nov. 2 in both Memphis and Pensacola.
