NY considers traffic cameras on school buses

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The New York state legislature is considering a bill that would allow school districts and bus contractors to install cameras on buses that would start recording once the stop arm of a bus is extended.

The idea would be to capture images of the vehicle and license plate of cars that don't stop when the bus is stopped to pick-up or let-off children.

The images would be used to issue a summons to the registered owner of the vehicle. Currently, a ticket can be issued only by a police officer who witnesses the violation.

"The number of school buses that are passed illegally each day is startling and something must be done to protect innocent children who are traveling to and from school," said Senator Catharine Young, the sponsor of the legislation.

A pilot program in 2007 in the Syracuse area showed illegal passes happened more than once a day for the single bus involved in the project.

The bill would establish a minimum fine of between $250-$400 with no points for a first violation when the violation is based on the camera-based evidence, with increasing penalties for repeat offenses.

Multiple violations could result in the driver having their license suspended.

President Barack Obama is going on a fundraising sweep through New York and Rhode Island as he continues to help Democrats raise money for November's elections. Obama headlines three events on Friday. Two in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from the 2012 campaign season.
