LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

In a town that thrives on running for something, at this time of the year the most often asked question is, what are you running for?

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has been the subject of this cross-examination for months as his Democratic Party continues its elongated  and so far unsuccessful search for a candidate for governor.

Mr. Bernero, you may recall, did run three years ago and  he lost.

One and done?

Well maybe not.  He has steadfastly refused to remove himself from the list of possible/would-be candidates.

That is up until right now.

"I will not run for governor," he blurted out the other day at an event where he sat side by side with the guy who beat him last time out.  Mr. Bernero and Gov. Rick Snyder were all smiles as they announced 1,000 new jobs and a multi-million dollar investment by a giant insurance company.

It's the first time he was so direct adding, "It's not my time.  I sort of promised by wife I would not run again as it is too hard to be mayor and run for governor at the same time."

Plus he smiles, "I have baggage."

He still thinks another Democrat can beat the guy from Ann Arbor.  Mr. Bernero, while all cheery with the governor at the event, concludes afterwards the incumbent has not created enough jobs and when you check his dashboard on accomplishments, the cupboard is bare.

So if not the Virg, who?

He thinks former Congressman Mark Schauer will run and he's probably right.

The mayor was also ga-ga over Jocelyn Benson running for governor, but the former Democratic candidate for Secretary of State last time out is reportedly fixated on doing it again hoping to bump off the current SOS Ruth Johnson in a rematch.

Oh, yes. No politician, worth his or her salt, wants to say never, so Mr. Bernero says he might run later on, but not now.
