A 76-year old Milan woman has died after winds caused the fires she was burning to suddenly grow out of control.
The Monroe County sheriff's department says the body of Anna Eliva Pinto was found near the edge of a wooded area in London Township on Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say Pinto was trapped between the fire and a 6-foot tall wire fence on property that is owned by her brother and sister-in-law.
She was helping to clear debris by raking leaves into piles and burning them on the property in the 1000 block of Darling Road when the fires spread out of control and onto other people's properties, police said.
A Milan firefighter discovered the body while crews worked on putting out hot spots, officials said. The woman was burned, but the exact cause of death has not been released.
