Bond denied for Bob Bashara charged in murder of his wife

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Not long ago, Bob Bashara was a Grosse Pointe businessman with a sprawling home. Now he is fighting to prove his innocence and doesn't have the money to do it.

"At this point, I do not have an attorney," Bashara told a judge on Wednesday.

Bashara is facing a laundry list of charges, and there is no one to defend him. He is already doing time after being convicted of hiring a hit man to kill the hit man he is accused of hiring to kill his wife, Jane.

The charges include conspiracy to commit homicide/murder -- first-degree premeditated, solicitation of a homicide/murder and homicide -- first-degree premeditated. All three counts carry a penalty of life without parole.

The three remaining charges include obstruction of justice, witness bribing, intimidating interfering with a criminal case and perjury.

Despite the serious charges, Bashara was all alone.

"May I ask for some more time?" he asked. "At this point, I'm trying to raise funds for an attorney."

But can he really raise the funds? He has been in prison, so he has no income. However, if he can raise the cash, he may be able to rehire his former attorney Mark Kriger.

"I know that Mark Kriger, who represented Bob Bashara in the past, would do the case, but lawyers have to be paid," said Fox 2 legal analyst Charlie Langton, who added this case will be a lot of work.

"When Kym Worthy said there were over 300 witnesses, witnesses that spread across six states across the country, you're going to need a lawyer that has got the time and can be paid for what he or she does. I'm not so sure if Bob Bashara has the money for that."

Bond was denied for Bashara, who will be back in court on May 7. If he hasn't raised enough money to hire an attorney by then, the court will have to appoint one.
