6 Months After Sandy, Some Residents Still Cleaning Up

Six months later, some areas along the Jersey Shore are ready for summer visitors, but residents in other areas say they are still in the cleanup stages.

Monday marks six months since Sandy hit the East Coast. The storm caused millions of dollars of damages.

In some areas, the cleanup hasn't yet started.

Residents in Ortley Beach in northern New Jersey say it will be cheaper to just tear down and rebuild rather than to fix their homes.

Six months later, some say they still have nowhere to call home.

"I left the house with two suitcases, figured I'd be gone two, three days, maybe a week," Walter Johnson said.

Johnson's home was destroyed by the storm.

"Here we are, six months later and I'm still homeless."

Gov. Chris Christie has reminded New Jersey residents that the state has a long way to go on the road to recovery.

Christie said more than $1.8 million in grants are on the way.

Overall, the Garden State has made some progress. Since the storm, $384 million in FEMA grants have been approved for New Jersey residents and $11 million were given out in New Jersey Relief Fund grants. Ninety-three percent of insurance claims, which includes homes and businesses, have already been handled.
