PHILADELPHIA -

Hundreds of runners and walkers gathered outside of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for Sunday's March of Dimes March for Babies.

Organizers say the March for Babies, which started in 1970, is the organization's premier fundraising event.

Nearly 3,000 people were expected to take part in this year's event.

According to the March of Dimes, 500,000 babies are born prematurely each year in the United States. The organization says the most urgent infant health problem in the United States is premature birth.

The money raised from March for Babies helps fund research and programs for babies who are born prematurely.
