Krull blog makes more miracles for Le Bonheur

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Two Kids, A Minivan and A Mortgage. Kate Krull started the blog as a way to share stories about her kids with family. She says 10 people – mainly family members and friends – read the blog.

"Mostly it was just an opportunity to put up pretty pictures of her children and make fun of her husband every once in a while," says her husband Erik Krull.

The blog that began as fun quickly turned into therapy for Kate when her then four-year-old daughter Lucy Krull was diagnosed with medullablastoma – a serious and rare type of brain cancer. Her blog quickly became an outlet to get her through the hard times when she faced the biggest challenges in her family and to her faith.

"When I couldn't sleep or when I was worried the most or when I was filled with so much fear and couldn't even speak to my husband about what I was feeling, I was able to write," says Kate. "There are days when what I write may be really great and there are days when I would think, I don't know if everyone's going to want to read what I have to say today, and that's fine."

In days, Kate's blog went from 10 readers to more than 300; the next thing Kate knew, 50,000 people were checking the blog just days after Lucy's diagnosis, from as close as Memphis to as far away as Africa and Australia.

"Lucy's story is so powerful and Kate doesn't hold back. She pretty much tells things exactly how they're going on, and I think people have related to that," says Erik.

Kate quickly realized how many mothers really did relate to her story. One day while Lucy was recovering in an Atlanta hospital, a blog reader ran up to Kate with a hug.

"I think, ‘Who is this crazy woman,?'and it was Christy and her daughter Alana," recalls Kate. "I had no idea; and they were at the hospital and we were at the hospital. We contact each other at least a couple of times a month. It was that friendship formed through the blog. Two mothers going through the same Hell and we found comfort in each other."

Kate found comfort in the hundreds of readers who left comments of support and prayer.

"I thank God for sending those people because I think they prayed for Lucy; I think that had a lot to do with her recovery," says Kate, "I don't know why the story was compelling enough – I think she's precious! I think it's a great story and I appreciate it – the blog has just grown. We've been able to use that to help raise money for Le Bonheur and help raise money for St. Jude."

One of the primary ways the Krull family raises money for the facilities is through the Go Lucy Go Foundation and annual Go Lucy Go 5K.

"We feel like it's a great opportunity to pay back because the community rallied around us when Lucy was sick and they allowed us with the money that they raised to support our family, to not worry about work, not worry about paying our house note, or how we were going to put food on the table. We could care for our child," says Kate.

Erik and Kate take the ups and downs from the last two years with Lucy as a learning experience, making sure families in similar situations have the same kind of support the community and the hospital showed them. The Go Lucy Go Foundation has grants to aid families struggling with non-medical needs like bills or gas money to get to and from the hospital.

The Krulls recently held their third annual Go Lucy Go 5K. More than 1,000 people attended to walk or run in support of Lucy and the foundation. Each year the 5K helps raise more than $20,000 for the Go Lucy Go Foundation.

It started with ten blog readers; now more than 1,000 support the Krulls and the GoLucyGo Foundation; all inspired by Lucy's miracle and to help more miracles happen at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.

"We may not be the biggest fundraiser or donor that Le Bonheur has but we do give a lot from our heart and we do it with great passion and such sincere thanks because of what we've been through," Kate said.
